European Week of Waste Reduction
Certificates of participation and best practice awarded to our school
Launching the Project - Composting at School
Our school will be participating in the European Week of Waste Reduction organised by WasteServ, which will be held between Monday 24th November and Friday 28th November (http://www.ewwr.eu/en)
The aim of our participation is to raise awareness about Food Waste and thus our project will consist in educating our students in recycling food waste and how to turn it into compost. Food waste represents a substantial loss of other resources such as land, water, energy and labour. Instead of being disposed of in landfills, food waste should ideally be sent for composting, so as to be used as fertilizer production or renewable energy, thus promoting a healthier environment.
The school has already invested in a compost bin. The launch will be done by a WasteServ official on Monday, 24th of November.
Teachers had already started giving information to our students by class discussions, websites, videos, in-class presentations, crafts and hand-outs which are presented to different age groups.
The ultimate result of this project will be the distribution of seeds to be planted into pots, using the compost made at school and which the students can take home.

Slogan competition
Year 6 students were asked to suggest a slogan. From a number of ideas raised, the slogan chosen was “Don’t throw it away, make compost today!” suggested by Stefan Spiteri. Stefan was presented a certificate by Sr Carmen Mizzi, School Principal during the school assembly on Friday, 7th November.
Students are the keys to a successful composting program, and it’s important to encourage them to feel ownership of the program. The benefits of such initiative will be helpful for our students and ultimately for our future generations.

These included taking part in a play to be presented at the official launch and designing props for the play, doing crafts related to the theme, watching related videos and taking part in activities using the interactive whiteboard. In addition, students also started bringing waste to be thrown in the compost bin.
