Visit to Betanja Home for the Elderly - December 2014
St Francis School’s goals are meant to develop the child in a holistic way. Besides academic importance, the school gives also opportunities to students to experience voluntary activities which enhance their religious beliefs to respect each other.
Once again, this Christmas, Year 6 students had the opportunity to visit the Betanja Home for the Elderly which caters for elderly nuns who dedicated their lives to the community. The children actively took part in a holy mass celebrated by Fr Joe Vella, the school's spiritual director. Christmas carols were sung during the mass. After the mass, a number of children read poems and thanksgiving thoughts which were written by themselves on their own initiative. Furthermore, the students also gave a number of small gifts to the nuns as appreciation for their contribution.
The children were then invited to see the process of how hosts for Holy Communion are made. From the number of questions raised, it was evident that the students were very interested. Children’s feedback about the activity was very positive and as expressed from a number of them, this was the first time that they visited an old people’s home to share the spirit of Christmas with others.
